Through talking with different naturals throughout the hair community, a question that I hear often is “what do you think about Curlformers?” I have used these wonderful little inventions twice. Once successfully and once not so successfully.
What are Curlformers?
Curlformers are breathable mesh spiral rods. They come in different lengths and widths so you can create your desired style for your hair type. I used the long & narrow Curlformers. You use them by threading the hook that comes with it through the spiral rod and pulling your hair through. Sounds simple right? Well there is a bit of an art to it. You have to hold the hook and pull your hair through a particular way – at an angle and with the right amount of tension to get your hair through. The process is a bit difficult to describe but once you try it, you’ll understand 100%. Also, understand that it will take more than one try to perfect your style.
Not So Successfully…
The first time I tried them I blow dried my hair first. Can we say “epic fail!” It did make it a little easier to pull my hair through because my hair wasn’t as thick. When I took the Curlformers out the next morning my hair had a slight spiral pattern to it but was bushy so I ended up just putting it in an up-do. In retrospect I guess I should have realized that the model’s hair on the package was wet for a reason!
Sucessfully
The next time I used them I made sure I left my hair wet. I put gel at the root of my hair as well as the tips. When I woke up the next morning I took my hair down and surprisingly my hair was dry. I was so surprised because when I style my hair any other way (flat twist-out, two strand twist-out, braid out, etc.), it takes at least 2 entire days for my hair to dry! With the Curlformers, my curls felt very silky and the rods thoroughly stretched my hair. After I pulled them apart I noticed that the back of my hair was slightly less defined. Probably because I did the back in bigger sections because I thought I was going to run out of rods. Next time I’ll remember to do them slightly smaller.
The only thing that I didn’t like about the Curlformers was that, for my hair, the curls didn’t last very long. After about 3 days I was right back to wearing my hair in a puff. So would I recommend Curlformers to a friend? I sure would, but not for a weekly style, more for a special occasion style.
