Everyone wants healthy hair. In order to achieve that there are certain steps we must take. Taking care of your hair involves more than simply going to your stylist on a regular basis. Here’s some simple yet important tips to help ensure that your hair grows & stays healthy.
In my experience these tips will protect your hair from damage and help your style last longer.
If your hair is…
Natural
Keep it moisturized. If it feels dry, then it is dry. Every few days use an oil or butter (i.e., coconut oil, shea butter, etc.) in your hair.
If your style permits, co-wash your hair once a week. Co-washing is using a conditioner or a mixture of oils and water to cleanse your hair instead of shampoo.
Try not to over-manipulate your hair because the more you manipulate your hair, the more prone it’ll be to breakage.
Trim your ends as needed. In order to retain length, trim as needed, usually every few months, not every 4-6 weeks as some people may suggest. Trimming your ends will also prevent “fairy knots”.
Detangle hair before shampooing. Make sure you use water and some type of oil to aid in the detangling. Or use a detangler of your choice.
Relaxed
Do not wait too long between touch-ups, but don’t relax your hair too often. Standard practice is 6 to 8 weeks.
Keep your hair oiled. Oil your lightly so it won’t be greasy and slick…unless that’s your hairstyle. Relaxed hair should have movement.
Keep your hair washed in between touch-ups. Whether you go to your stylist to have this done, wash your hair every two weeks.
Braided or Weaved
Keep your hair cleansed and oiled.
Although you may have a style that can last for months, you need your scalp to breathe in order for it to grow. The goal is to wash your scalp, not the weave or braids. Put a little shampoo in your hands and massage your scalp, not vigorously scrub.
If you have a weave, put shampoo in your hands and massage your hair done. Again, don’t vigorously scrub.
